Balance

The forces of nature are not something to be meddled with. Where there is beauty and light, there is always turmoil and conflict. As a final project as a student, this was a display of my beliefs and values in the most beautiful and grandiose manner possible.

In this geometric world of beauty and life there is seemingly nothing that it lacks. But the universe always has a way of proving us wrong. Like the spark of a fire, with the sudden entrance of an alien leaf is instant chaos and cataclysmic destruction.
Inspired by themes of renewal, hope, climate change, the animation highlights the duality of beauty and destruction.
Story
As beauty is seen + felt, not told, it was important that the story could communicate without narration. The solution was the mirroring of similar events within various landscapes. A flower field, forest, mountains.
The red was an important characteristic from the beginning to clearly communicate foreign, danger, and intensity.
Design
One of the main challenges was the design of the alien catalyst. Aside from its vibrant red, the rigid geometric silhouette and detailed angular veins were a key point in differentiating this object from the environment.
Referencing the natural world from it's leaflike qualities to the insect like fluttering wings to even the sparks of a flame, I felt that this odd combination felt just enough familiar and out of place as needed.
With time constraints, a lot of color correcting and post effects were done in Nuke to ensure fast render times. A friend showed me the heatwave node and I was transformed. But of course the B.M. Optical Glow was my bestie.
Animation
The method of destruction for each environment not only related to the design language but also directly correlated with a natural disaster--earthquake, forest fire, tornado.
